MDMA-Assisted Integration for PTSD

A research-informed therapeutic service that supports individuals who have participated in MDMA-assisted psychotherapy through clinical trials or other approved programs. Integration helps people process insights, emotions, and trauma-related material that emerged during their MDMA sessions—especially when traditional approaches have not been effective on their own.

What Is MDMA-Assisted Integration?

If you’re living with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and have tried talk therapy, medications, or both without lasting relief, MDMA-assisted psychotherapy may have offered you a new path forward, particularly if you participated in a clinical trial or Expanded Access program.

Our role at the Behavioral Wellness Clinic is integration: a structured therapeutic process that helps you make sense of, contextualize, and apply what surfaced during your MDMA-assisted sessions.

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine) is a synthetic compound that can temporarily reduce fear and defensiveness, enhance emotional insight, and increase trust and openness in the therapeutic relationship during legally sanctioned studies. When followed by dedicated integration therapy, these effects can lead to deep, lasting healing.

This treatment approach remains in advanced clinical trials and is part of an Expanded Access program approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). While BWC does not administer MDMA or conduct MDMA-assisted therapy sessions, we do provide expert integration support for individuals who have legally received this treatment elsewhere.

The Science Behind the Treatment

MDMA-assisted psychotherapy is not the same as recreational MDMA or Ecstasy. In clinical settings, MDMA is carefully dosed and administered under medical supervision, with the support of trained therapists before, during, and after the session. The goal is not to escape reality, but to face it with less fear and more clarity.

In earlier Phase 2 trials, 107 people with chronic, treatment-resistant PTSD received a structured course of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy. Results showed that:

  • 56% of participants no longer met the criteria for PTSD two months after treatment
  • 68% no longer had PTSD at a 12-month follow-up

These findings led the FDA to grant MDMA Breakthrough Therapy status in 2017, accelerating its path to potential approval.

The Behavioral Wellness Clinic participated in these trials at the University of Connecticut Health Center (UCHC), under the leadership of Dr. Monnica Williams and Sara Reed, MS.

Today, while we cannot provide MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, we continue to offer integration services for individuals who received MDMA-assisted therapy through the Expanded Access program in partnership with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS).

What to Expect in MDMA-Assisted Integration

Integration supports the healing work that began during your MDMA-assisted psychotherapy session(s). While we do not administer MDMA, our integration process mirrors the same trauma-informed, supportive structure used in clinical follow-up care.

  • Preparation:
Before you begin integration, you’ll meet with your therapy team to discuss your history, experiences during MDMA-assisted sessions, and goals for ongoing healing.
  • Post-MDMA Processing Sessions:
These sessions take place after your MDMA-assisted therapy (conducted elsewhere). Your therapist will help you explore emotions, memories, and insights that surfaced during the MDMA experience and support you in making meaning of them.
  • Ongoing Integration:
Integration sessions help you apply what you learned to your daily life—strengthening emotional regulation, improving relationships, and building long-term resilience.

Many individuals who participated in Expanded Access programs have multiple MDMA sessions (typically three, spaced about a month apart) and continue with integration therapy afterward to deepen and solidify therapeutic gains.

Who Might Benefit from MDMA-Assisted Integration?

You may benefit from integration services if:

  • You participated in MDMA-assisted psychotherapy through a clinical trial or Expanded Access program
  • You have PTSD that hasn’t responded to traditional therapies
  • Your symptoms significantly impact daily functioning
  • You want a research-supported way to extend and deepen the healing from your MDMA experiences

Our clinical team will work with you to explore how integration therapy can support your recovery and ensure that it aligns with your therapeutic needs.

Committed to Equity and Access

At the Behavioral Wellness Clinic, we are deeply committed to inclusive, culturally informed care. Dr. Williams helped lead the first MAPS therapist training specifically for providers of color and clinicians serving marginalized communities, ensuring that MDMA therapy is accessible and relevant for everyone who may benefit from it.
