Therapy & Evaluation for Sexual & Gender Minorities

We provide affirming, research-informed care for people exploring their sexual or gender identity or healing from discrimination-related trauma.

When Identity & Safety Are In Conflict

Exploring your sexual orientation or gender identity should be a process of self-discovery, not one shaped by fear, shame, or isolation. Yet for many people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or gender non-conforming (LGBTQ+), that exploration happens under pressure. You may be questioning your identity, navigating relationships, or trying to understand where you fit in a world that hasn’t always been welcoming to you.

The Invisible Impact of Minority Stress

Living as a sexual or gender minority in a world where discrimination still exists can lead to deep, lasting psychological stress. This includes overt homophobia or transphobia, but also the subtler forms—like microaggressions, invalidating comments, or feeling unsafe in health care or workplace settings. These experiences can contribute to symptoms of anxiety, depression, isolation, hypervigilance, substance use, and even trauma responses similar to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

For many, the cumulative effect of these stressors leads to a form of suffering that is difficult to name but deeply felt. These are not personal failings—they are the result of biased systems and environments. And they deserve real, informed care.

How the Behavioral Wellness Clinic Can Help

At the Behavioral Wellness Clinic, we create a therapeutic space where all identities are respected, affirmed, and supported. We provide:

  • Safe and inclusive care for LGBTQ+ individuals, including those still exploring identity or seeking clarity.
  • Treatment for minority stress and trauma, including symptoms caused by long-term exposure to bias, violence, or systemic injustice.
  • Support for intersecting identities, recognizing how race, gender, class, and orientation compound experiences of marginalization.
  • Evaluations for gender-affirming medical care, workers’ compensation, and legal matters related to discrimination.
  • Help with real-world challenges such as workplace discrimination, same-sex parenting stress, or coping with heterosexism.

Whether you’re looking for clarity, relief, validation, or tools to navigate a hostile environment, we’re here.

Clinical Expertise Rooted in Research

The Behavioral Wellness Clinic is a national leader in the treatment of trauma related to discrimination. Dr. Monnica Williams has developed pioneering tools to assess trauma linked to racial, ethnic, and sexual minority stress, including:

  • UConn Racial and Ethnic Stress and Trauma Survey (UnRESTS): A semi-structured clinical interview that helps uncover trauma related to identity-based discrimination.
  • Trauma Symptoms of Discrimination Scale (TSDS): A validated, 21-item self-report tool for assessing trauma symptoms following discriminatory experiences.

These tools allow our clinicians to more accurately identify and treat the root causes of psychological distress, especially when those causes have been overlooked, minimized, or misunderstood elsewhere.

Why People Choose the Behavioral Wellness Clinic

Our commitment is to care that sees the whole person, not just a diagnosis. Whether or not your therapist shares your identity, you will be treated with deep cultural respect, open-mindedness, and real curiosity. We don’t expect you to educate us.
